IF ROMEO WERE FIVE MINUTES LATE
© 2008

After a troubled adolescence involving a violent Latino gang in New York City, Isabela Leon moves to Poughkeepsie, NY in an effort to start a new life. She is an aspiring young chef enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America and an amateur filmmaker.  After the death of her best friend at sixteen, Isabela began chronicling her own life in video. When she reaches the end of a tape, she sends it to a friend in order to preserve her story. As a result of living such a tenuous existence at such a young age, Isabela is a bit of a daredevil and is slightly reckless with her own life.

Greta Osborne is a serious young sculptor who lives in Poughkeepsie and works as a guard at Dia in Beacon. In her own studio she is working on  a sculpture project entitled, " If Romeo Were Five Minutes Late".  The concept of the piece is that, had Romeo been late,  Juliet would have woken up in time to save him from the intended suicide. The story would have continued on and, like a blank canvas, would have an unlimited number of paths and potential endings from that point forward.

Isabela crosses paths with someone she knew from her gang life and is reminded of her loyalty and obligations when she is asked to participate in a well-organized drug deal.  At the same time she meets and pursues Greta. Drawn to each other the girls begin a relationship, in spite of Greta’s fear of getting involved with someone so careless with her own life. It is with Greta's sculpture piece in mind that Isabela sets out to free herself from the gang once and for all. Isabela videotapes this story as it unfolds and the viewer is privy to Isabela's intimate feelings and thoughts, sometimes before the actual events take place in the film.
